Now Thomas…said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands,…I will not believe.”
A week later…Jesus came and stood among them….Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands….Stop doubting and believe.”…
Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” —John 20:24-29
Sometimes, I feel like Thomas:
Unless I can see your work, I will not believe.
Unless I get return phone calls,
Unless my weekly report is full of new gifts,
Unless my percentage is jumping towards the goal,
it is hard to believe that you are really working.
There’s so much I can’t see yet:
Where all the finances will come from,
and how long it will take for them to come,
Exactly when I’m moving,
and what apartment I’ll live in,
Who I will get to know,
and who will I call on a bad day.
May I be counted as one who has not seen and yet believed.
On the days that it is hard to see,
strengthen my faith that you are working,
give me courage to keep going,
help me to believe, even when I can’t see.
In the name of the resurrected Christ. Amen.
